VELYN STOOD IN THE AIRPORT STARING AT HER BOARDING TICKET— a one-way first-class ticket to Paris. Her ticket to a new life and new beginning. She tossed her old life in the past, including the man who led it. Adam, who stood next to her, whistled with restlessness.

“When is this flight coming?” he complained again as he looked at his watch.

“I’m surprised you’re so anxious,” Evelyn said.

“Of course, I am. I’ve always wanted to go to Paris.”

When Evelyn told Adam about her plans to go to France, he immediately jumped on board. Evelyn had been surprised. She was certain that no one would want to follow her, especially after what happened. Many of her employees had taken their last paychecks and left, not wanting to be associated with the failed designer whose buzz crashed and died that easily. But Adam told her he had never thought about leaving. He was a great friend, and she was lucky to have someone willing to follow her.

Christina probably would have come, but Evelyn knew there was no way the young woman could come. Greece was her home. That’s what Evelyn felt bad about the most because more than likely, Christina would continue to follow in her mother’s footsteps even though she was good with fashion.

“Here’s your stuff,” Loukas said as he walked over to them with two carrier bags in hand. Evelyn recognized one as her own, the one she had told Loukas to fill her stuff with, but the other one she did not.

“Thank you,” Evelyn said as she took her bag with some of the important things that she couldn’t leave behind. “What’s that?”

“It’s my bag,” Loukas said with a smile as he pulled out his own ticket. Evelyn’s eyes widened.

“You’re coming too?” she asked, surprised. “What about your home?”

“Never really had much of a home here,” he said, shrugging. “Besides, I want to see what you can do and how far you can take me.”

“Or he just wants to see the women in France,” Adam joked.

“The country of romance,” Loukas said, “and I heard the women are generous to their lovers too.”

Evelyn couldn’t help but laugh, feeling warmth in her chest. She wasn’t alone, and that was the best feeling ever, especially with her going to a new country where she did not know the people or their language. They would all be starting this journey together.

Mercer came back over from the counter, where he had spoken to one of the workers. He wore a bright smile on his face that gave Evelyn confidence and made her feel like she wasn’t making a mistake.

“Everything is in order,” he told her reassuringly. He reached inside his carry-on bag and pulled a small gift box out of his pocket. It was black wrapped with a silver bow. Evelyn eyed it with curiosity until she realized Mercer was giving it to her.

Her eyes widened as she looked back and forth between the gift and him. “Is this for me?”

“Yes,” Mercer said smiling warmly.
